Happy Halloween!!!

Posted in Guild Wars, MMO with tags , on 31/10/2010 by arthur1977

I hope everyone had a great Halloween full of Animals, Goblins and Jedi’s!  My wife and I had a whopping 5 kids turn up at the door Trick-or-Treating (our average over the three years we have lived here is about 8).  We did enjoy the day taking out little one in her cute pink Kitten costume to Great grandpa’s house to visit him and some other relatives that were in town for the weekend.  After that we had a nice bite to eat at Kelsey’s then off to the grandparents to show off our cutie again.

Now that its 10pm its time to relax and listen to some Limblifter or maybe the most recent GuildCast and play Guild Wars for the next couple of hours.  If you want to say hello before my gamer ADD kicks in my character is named King Arthur Vii, and I am still in Pre-searing (hoping to get out of their tonight).

Final Fantasy XIV Impression

I have to admit I am not the most qualified person to be writing this since I have not logged in for about a week now.  It turns out real life is consuming a lot more of my time then I though it would.  Over the first month since launch I have spent a fair amount of time in-game and have enjoyed my time in Eorzea.

I think this game has a lot of good things going froward.  I really like the harvesting and crafting mechanics, they are a refreshing break from the simple click and wait for the bar to fill that are featured in a lot of MMO’s.  The job system allows you to customize you character in many various ways and create a class that is all your own.  Square-Enix did a wonderful job making a breathtaking environment for you to explore and interact with.  The music in FFXIV is second to none, this is the only the second MMO I have ever played with the music enabled (the other was Sword of the New World).  I have only experienced the first part of the story line but they have done a good job of making it interesting and engaging.

With all the good things this game offers there are some very noticeable issues holding this game back.  The most obvious issue is the lag you experience with people and NPC’s loading in to your world. The market wards still need a little tweaking to make it easier to search, I personally like the fact that they are trying to stay away from putting in an auction house.  Some of the other complaints they plan to work on in the next version updates are making the user interface more friendly and monster placement.

Overall this game has a lot of promise but it is currently lacking a little polish and fine tuning. After reading all the “Ask the Dev’s” posts that have been coming out on the Loadstone recently I believe that Square-Exin is listening to the community and is working diligently to make adjustments.  I hope people are willing to give this game a chance, even if it’s in a few months when more of the kinks are worked out.

As for me, unfortunately I just canceled my account this afternoon.  The reason for this has more to do with the amount of free time I have to play rather than the state of the game.  I realized that with my work schedule and 5 month old daughter taking up most of my time playing a MMO with a monthly subscription was not workable.  I plan on resubscribing to Final Fantasy XIV when things calm down in real life.  Until then I plan to spend some of my limited free time playing my PS3 (PSN: CDN-Dragoon), and casually working on my Warrior/Ranger in Guild Wars.

I wish everyone in Seraphim all the best and want to thank them for letting me join their amazing LinkShell.

Real life is messing with my gaming time!

The last week has been a little crazy with work and family coming to town leaving me only a little free time and no time for gaming.  That’s ok though, sometimes an enforced break is need to recharge the batteries and get a new perspective on the games you are playing.

I hope to get some free time soon to explore more of Eorzea, but until then it’s never a bad thing to spend some time with your family.

FFXIV Free Trial Period Extension!

I will give Square-Enix credit for listening to the community and realizing that there are some issues that need to be addressed in FFXIV.  Today they started their restructuring of the market wards with their update, it’s no action house so people will still be frustrated but I like that they are sticking to their original idea. The development team also posted on the Lodestone some of the other changes that will be implemented in the next series of updates, it looks promising.

Coming as a nice little surprise, they also announced that they will give current players an extra 30 days free to decide if this is the game for them.   I am excited that Square is trying to make a different style of MMO and am willing to give some leeway as they work out some of the kinks.

Crafters Corner FFXIV Style

Posted in Final Fantasy, MMO, Square Enix with tags , , on 13/10/2010 by arthur1977

I admit it, I am addicted to Final Fantasy XIV.  I think it’s a great game and the crafting system is one of the reasons.  If you just jump into the game and have no experience playing Square-Enix’s first MMO Final Fantasy XI you could get easily lost. I am nowhere near an expert when it come to crafting but I have enjoyed getting my Carpenter and Black Smith to rank 10 and now I am focusing on weaver (I figure it’s always nice to make your own armor).

If you are interested in crafting the first thing I suggest you do is read Lord Bladewind’s DoH (crafting) Guide that is posted on FFXIVCore. Secondly, you should get use to checking out sites like FFXIV Crafters and the Final Fantasy XIV database by Yellow Gremlin. These two site will be your best friend to research different recipes.

Well I cannot give you anymore crafting advice because I am still a novice myself. If you know of any sites that could help a fledgling crafter please post them in the comments.

See you online!

Focus, you must have focus!

I find this especially true in Final Fantasy XIV with its amazing job system.  I have been playing FFXIV since early release on September 22 and have not managed to get a job above Rank 9!  If you take a look at my Lodestone profile, Xanadu Virtue, I have 4 different Jobs at rank 9, one at 8 and another at 5.  As you can see I lack focus, and this is a problem since I only have about 8 hours a week to play.

The plan going forward is to select a few different jobs and focus on them (one fighting, one harvesting, one crafting?).  As much as I like doing leves and exploring out of the Camps Drybone and Emerald Moss, I want to explore more of the world.  I love the fact that changing jobs is so easy but it also makes it very easy to get lost in all the choices.

Oh well, its always a good thing having lots to do in a MMO! 🙂

The Doc is IN!

Bloody hell, what a way to show the World you are ready for the pressure of the MLB playoffs! Roy Halladay in his first playoff start pitched a complete game no hitter (only 1 walk) against the Cincinnati Reds.

I am glad that Roy Halladay finally made the playoffs after getting traded out of Toronto.  I do admit that I am a Toronto Blue Jays fan, but after seeing Doc work so hard day in and day out for years I am glad he found success in Philadelphia. Roy showed in his time with the Jays that he is a class act and a true leader; some things that are missing from to many star athletes now a days.

Just because Roy Halladay is on the team I will be cheering for the Phillies this post season to become World Series Champions.
