Waiting for FFXIV on the PS3

Posted in Final Fantasy, MMO with tags , , on 27/06/2011 by arthur1977

I am starting to get the MMO itch again, specifically to try Final Fantasy XIV on the PS3 (whenever it gets released). I really want to try a console MMO but DC Universe is not my cup of tea.

I hope this is not another short term excursion through Eorzea. With my Little Princess sleeping better I should have more time to play. I might have to do some negotiating with my Beautiful Wife and block out some time every other week for dedicated FFXIV gaming. This should allow me to do some larger group events. I had a good time exploring and meeting great people in my first trip to Eorzea, I hope a few of them are still around.

All this craving for MMO’s should not be takes as stand alone games suck, I am really enjoying playing stand alone games but there is something missing. I enjoy the social aspect of MMO but I also miss the feeling of character ownership and advancement.

With a few more months until FFXIV is released on the PS 3 I hope to finish inFAMOUS and Castlevania : LoS. You never know Final Fantasy XIV for the PS3 might get bumped back again giving me time to play Uncharted 3, but I hope not. I think the PS3 release is what the game needs to get a well needed infusion of new players.

Only time will tell….

Being Bad in Empire City

Posted in Games, PS3 with tags , , on 20/06/2011 by arthur1977

Thanks to the welcome back program offered up by Sony I finally picked up a copy of inFAMOUS and am loving it!  With my first play through I decided to go Evil as a tribute to one my friends at work, he kind of likes getting under people’s skin just for the fun of it.

I have just made it out of the Neon District so I figure I am about a third of the way through the game.  The story is engaging as it slowly tells you what happened to Cole and how his decisions start affecting your friends the general public.  I like how they introduce you powers as you advance the story line.  Having all the blast shards and dead drops littered all over the city have been taken up a fair amount of my time recently, but I loving searching for them.

I have to admit being evil is quite a different for me.  My nice guy tendencies tend to come out even in the digital world, but its been fun challenging myself to take the dark path. I am interested in seeing with my second tour of Empire City how things are changed when I play Model Citizen Cole.

Add inFAMOUS 2 to my list of games I hope to play, man there is just to many good games coming out and so little time.

Congratulations Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Champs!

As hard as it is for a life time Canuck fan to admit the Boston Bruins played a great series and deserve the title of Stanley Cup champs. Tim Thomas was amazing!

As for the citizens of Vancouver who rioted, really! It almost shames me being a Canuck fan after that display. Millions in damages and even more bad publicity for the city of Vancouver.

Our team might have lost but remember people its just a sporting event!

Let’s Go Canucks!

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Among Thieves

Posted in Games, PS3 with tags , , on 12/06/2011 by arthur1977

Well I finally buckled down and finished both Uncharted games tonight. Even after 4 years the first game looks great and the second one even better.  I got the first Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune when I bought my systems years ago and made it to chapter 20 then put it aside for some other game.  If I would have only know I was just an hour away from completing it I might have soldered on. In the end I didn’t and many moons passed (about 2 years in fact) before I got the itch to play it again when I borrowed Uncharted 2: Among Thieves from a friend about two weeks ago.  I almost put in the first Uncharted to finish the story line but the draw of the second game was to great and I jumped right in and got addicted.  In the end both these games are beautiful, well written, and just flat out fun to play!

I managed to finish Among Thieves on normal around 11:00 PM acquiring 29% of the trophies.  Then I put in Drake’s Fortune  and with a quick glance at the IGN walk through polished it off on easy a short 45 minutes later.  I managing to get 40% of the trophies on that playthrough.  In the past I would have been a little frustrated with the low trophy count for Among Thieves, but recently I realized there are way to many great games out there to worry about getting Platinum’s and just enjoy and beat the games.  Time permitting I can always go back and clean up some of the easier ones.

I now cannot wait for the third chapter in the Uncharted to come out.  Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be out this fall (November 1st) but before then my goal is to finish some of the other games in my library including: Infamous, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, Resistance 2 and Castlevania: Lord of Shadows.

Hopefully I can find the time! 🙂

My top 5 Final Fantasy`s

Posted in Final Fantasy with tags , , on 01/06/2011 by arthur1977

I was listening to a recent IGN podcast Beyond (189) in which there were talking about the Final Fantasy Series.  This got me thinking about my long history with the series and what are my favorite ones.  I must admit I am starting to show my age with this because I remember buying the first Final Fantasy for the NES when I was a kid.  Final Fantasy also has had an influence on my console purchases when Final Fantasy VII was released on the PlayStation instead of the new Nintendo system, I switched and have never looked back.

Over the past 20 to 25 years I have spent hundreds of hours playing Final Fantasy`s.  I have not played all the Final Fantasy`s that have been released in North America missing both III and V. There are some that I have played through more than once and others that I have not beaten but they all have their own charm.

Ok, now to my top 5.  It took me a while to figure out the order but here goes nothing.

1. FF VI (Super NES) – Amazing story and game play.

2. FF IV (Super NES) – Dragoon has to be my favorite class.

3. FF IX (PlayStation) – Great throwback full of character.

4. FF (NES) – The Original hard as nails.  Only 9 spells per level… try doing that now!

5. FF VII (PlayStation) – Evolution of the RPG.

You might notice that most of my favorites are on the older systems.  I have enjoyed the recent Final Fantasy releases but I have always found something lacking with them.  With FF X I didn`t like the leveling system, FF XII never sucked me in (I was playing EverQuest 2 at the time and might not have given it enough of a chance), and FF XIII has a great battle system but the story was just a little to bubble gum for me.

I would like to make a quick note about Final Fantasy XI and XIV.  I have played both these games for only a limited amount of time but really enjoyed them.  I hope to give FF XIV another chance to crack my top 5 when it is released for the PS3 sometime in the future.

Please let me know what is your favorite Final Fantasy game by leaving me a comment.
