The pros and cons of a Canadian Winter

Posted in Life with tags , , , on 30/01/2013 by arthur1977

With the weather warming up from -20C to only -2C we finally got a chance to spend some time outside with our Little Princess. We showed her how to make her first Snow angel and snowman.

The downside of the sub zero weather is that things freeze. I had the fortune of having the outfeed of my sub pump freeze last Tuesday night when the temperature hit -20C. Waking up at 3am to hear you pump stuck on unable to remove the water is never a good thing. The next day I spent 3 hours outside chipping and breaking away flex pipe to remove the blockage.

I still love winter time and cannot wait until I get into my first snowball fight with my Little Princess!

Dust 514 Beta

Posted in MMO with tags , , , , on 28/01/2013 by arthur1977

My friend Sergio down loaded the Dust 514 beta for our gaming night Friday. We spent about 2 hours exploring the wide array of customization options and each did a few battles.

The battles were fun, you can either play ambush or skirmish currently. I have been playing skirmish where your objective is to control missile terminals to destroy you opponents mobile command center.

You get the option to start off with 5 or 6 different drop suits each designed for your play style (sniper, healer, Anti-Armor, etc). After you earn some Isk you can start customizing your own drop suits with various weapons, armor and perks.

I found the controls sharp and the liked the button layout on the controller. The amount of options could be overbearing if you are not use to MMO’s and researching the type of character you plan to build towards. The ability to specialize in anything will make this game very customizable to anyone’s play style. So far I have tried a sniper build (not for me, I take to long to aim), Anti-Armor (nope again) and lastly I tried the Artificer suit (more to my liking, healing and SMG!).

Dust514I had such a great time even just watching my friends play when I got home I started downloading the Beta and made a character, Battle Warlock, before work Saturday morning. I ran a few battle with him Saturday night and have been having a blast. So far I have put my skill points into hacking, SMG, and remote explosives (just for fun).

I am interested in seeing what CCP starts adding to the beta next. This game looks like it might be a nice little time sink for the foreseeable future.

Old Guardians slowly becoming obsolete in GC

Posted in Games, Square Enix with tags , , , on 27/01/2013 by arthur1977

Well its starting to become tough sledding in Guardian Cross for my aged team. With most of my guardians from the old world (the plaines and volcanic zones) its getting harder to keep up with the new tier from the Iceland and Desert.

I had recently done well over the holidays getting a few greats from the coliseum, but I think that time is at an end. This week with a nice line up of guardians with a rough attack of 2800 I only have a 50/50 chance of winning while ranked B/B+. Finishing in that range is nice but will not land me and new guardians or a Special Hunting Ticket.

I have to admit I am a little jealous of some of you luckier guys out there. I have used well over 40 special hunting tickets and have netted a grand total of 2 5* guardians (Int Ifrit, Power Phoenix)! All my other 5* guardians were acquired by trading with other and most tended to be off class, like my Fast Titan. I don’t mind this but it is coming to a breaking point for my team. Without new world blood my team will become to weak to compete for any real prizes.

Soon I will have to make the decision, put down even more cash or accept the role of stone/SHT farmer for some of my friends. Either way I don’t plan on quitting any time soon but I have my fingers crossed that my luck changes.

A Sunday road trip to Ottawa for Playoff Football!

Posted in Sports with tags , , , , , , on 21/01/2013 by arthur1977

My friend Big Sexy sent me a text Friday afternoon wondering if I wanted to take a bus trip to Ottawa to watch the NFL conference finals. I agree and met them outside of Jaxx’s at 10:30, it turns out this trip was for a Bud Light promotion and also included a chance to win a trip to the Super Bowl! We headed up and started the party on the bus, there were 12 people and all of them had made this trip for a couple years.

The bus trip took a couple of hours and was great getting the know the other people taking the trip. We got to Tail Gators in Ottawa around 1:00, nice and early to scout out some great seats to spend the next nine hours. We grabbed some seats close to the bar and with a good grouping of TV’s around us. The funniest part was once we sat down the waitress showed up and it turned out to be Alicia the same waitress that they had for the last 2 years! Well the pitchers started flowing after that and we all registered for our chance to win the Super Bowl trip then settled down to watch some football. The first game was great and the 49ers fan that was sitting to my left was looking a little rough after the first half. During the first intermission they drew 6 names and no one in our group was called. All of us were feeling great after the first game (none of us were Falcons fans) and Tail Gators put out a buffet for the us to get some food.

While there was a break in the games they pulled another 6 names and to my surprise the last name pulled was ME! It was the third year in a row that someone from Jaxx’s was called up in the final 18. The draw for trip was set for around half time of the Baltimore / New England game so I got comfortable and poured myself another drink.

A view from the Finalist Area for the Super Bowl Trip draw.

Once again the game was awesome, the first half was close with great catches and lots of bone crushing hits. Over the first intermission they called the last 6 names that made the finals, no one else from my group made it up. It is funny though how many new best friends I had with a potential trip to the Super Bowl hanging in the balance! Once halftime hit I waited to be called up but like most events being handled that day they were behind. The 3ed quarter started and about half way through they called up all the finalists to check ID’s and to put their names on a ballot. Two contestants didn’t have their ID so they got disqualified (sweet better odds for me). The process to get down to the last 8 was a draw, and that is where my luck came to an end as I was not one of the 8 luck contestants that had their names pulled. Oh well, being one of the last 16 out of 400 that had registered was still nice.

We watched the end of the game and celebrated Baltimore finishing off New England and settled our tab. Not a bad day of watching football and drinking beer with friends, the tab for the group I was cheering with totaled around 250$ including a gracious tip for our hard working waitress. Once on the bus the group split on a couple pizzas and settled in. The ride home was a little more subdued with half the bus catching up on some sleep. It was a hell of a day 14 hours day and well worth it.

Great football, and getting a chance to meet some good people, you cannot ask for anything more.

NHL 13, skill level: Beginner!

Posted in Games, Sports with tags , , , , on 10/01/2013 by arthur1977

Out of the games I bought on sale NHL 13 has been eating up the most of my limited free time.

I have been splitting my time between Create a Pro and Hockey Ultimate Team.

Kingston FrontenacsFor my Created pro I made a two way centre and he is currently playing for the Kingston Frontenacs. I have been doing reasonably well but when I shift the difficulty from Rookie to Pro I cannot score to save my career.

Raymond-CanucksMy Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT) is slowly rounding in to shape. It’s a cool system of assembling a team and since I have got the game on the cheap I don’t mind buying a few packs of cards in hoped of getting a rare all-star . I have now assembled the full third line for the Canucks (Raymond, Lapierre, and Hansen). It’s been fun buying and selling different players for the games currency Pucks. My best pick up so far has to be getting the speedy Mason Raymond for 1100 pucks.

Another nice thing is being able to collect jerseys and customize your you teams appearance. I currently have my home jersey as the 97-98 Canucks and my away jersey is the Frontanecs 3ed one.

I am still horrible playing but hopefully over time I can improve my skill level. My biggest deficiency is equally aiming my shots on net and winning face offs!

All in all the games graphics and controls are great and it gives you a ton of different game styles to play.

If you are looking for a casual player for a GM Connected league please let me know in the comment section.

Wishful thinking for all Vancouver Canucks fans!

OMG…. Game On, eh!

Finally after months of negotiations it looks like the NHL and NHLPA finally agreed on a new collective bargaining agreement.

I have a feeling that the damage from this lock out will greater than the one 8 years ago. Personally I am happy to see hockey again but I am not jumping for joy. My big hope is that all the business and people affected by the lock out can get back to work.

I am also interested in seeing how the NHL tries to get the fans they lost back. After the last lock out many teams raised ticket prices with no complaints, I have a feeling that would be a really bad move this time.

Bring on the mad panic of signings before the start of the season in late January. Anyone know where Roberto Luongo is going to end up?

Go Canucks Go!

After Christmas value shopping :)

Posted in Life with tags , , , on 05/01/2013 by arthur1977

One of the main reasons why I don’t mind getting gift cards for Christmas is that the majority of items I am looking for get insanely reduced after the holidays.  This year I landed about 100$ in money for various stores and I turned it into 3 blu-ray DVD’s and a pair of PS3 games I have had my eye on.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – 33$ on for 8

Iron Man 2 – 29$ on for 8

The Hangover Part 2 – 30$ for 10

NHL 13 – 60$ for 20

Sleeping Dogs -60$ for 20

I really think this was a great haul since both games were released not that long ago.  My wife also had to talk me out of purchasing Play Station All-Star Battle Royale that was marked 50% off.  She did have a great argument in that how much free time am I going to have once our second little one arrives in February.  I will still end up paying full price for some games and movies through out the year but saving money anytime of year is nice!

I hope other people made out as good as me bargain shopping.
